Analyzing Message in "Gene Map Becomes A Luxury Item"

In this post, I analyzed my article text using the "Message and Purpose" section of the Student's Guide textbook.

Strobridge & Co. "War of Wealth Bank Run"
February 10, 1895 Public Domain
Which bulleted questions found on page 181 of the Student's Guide apply most to the author's purpose?

  • The first question that applies to the author's purpose would be the response to a particular event regarding the issue. The article address new statistics that the cost to map one's entire genome sequence has hit a all time low, costing an individual $350,000 to log his entire DNA sequence. She also addresses a particular individual's business transaction with a European genetics lab. The author felt compelled to note that the has been a boom in the gene mapping industry; especially among the wealthier classes.
  • The second question that applies to the author's purpose would be the expression of one's opinion on the subject matter. The author clearly expresses her concern that only the financial elite are entitled to such medical tests, as such technology would create a more comprehensive individual medical treatment for the general patient. But, she also notes that due to the technology's relative "youth" that eventually the tech will be made available to the masses, referring to handheld tech and space travel as examples.
  • The final question that applies to the author's purpose would be the avocation for change concept. The author does hint throughout her piece that the federal governments of the Western world should fund such programs and research in order to hasten the time between "availability only to the elite" and "available to all" tech periods.
Which bullet points do not seem relevant to the goals of your author's text? Why not?

  • The points brought up are not really subject to interpretation. The author is not reflecting on an issue, but attempting to inform readers of a typically misunderstood issue. Within the first few sentences it may seem that the author is reflecting on a current event and her previous involvement within the genetic engineering profession, but instead presents the audience with a series of statistics and histories.
Are there nuances or layering to the author's message?

  • The author is solely using an recent event in order to provide a series evidence to explain why genetic technology/ genome mapping is becoming a booming industry.
